Boris and Prince William cheer on Three Lions as 60,000 fans pack Wembley

Boris Johnson and Prince William cheered alongside tens of thousands at Wembley as England won a spot in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final.

Millions across the country are celebrating after The Three Lions beat Denmark 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The prime minister tweeted that the team had ‘played their hearts out’ in a ‘fantastic performance’.

He posted a picture of himself wearing a personalised England shirt with ‘Boris’ on the back as he made his way to the stadium earlier on.

The Tory leader was seen sitting next to David Beckham and former manager Fabio Capello during the match.

The Duke of Cambridge had to enjoy the moment without Kate Middleton who was ordered to self-isolate after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid.

After the game, the future king tweeted: ‘What a game, what a result! A huge team effort @England

‘The whole country will be behind you on Sunday #ItsComingHome’.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted a picture of himself celebrating as he watched the match on TV, with the hashtag: ‘£ItsComingHome’.

Millions across the country were left gutted when Denmark’s Mikkel Damsgaard notched the opening goal with a long-distance free-kick.

But fans were sent into raptures after Raheem Sterling equalized just before half-time.

There were fears Gareth Southgate’s squad could be heading for penalties on their quest to secure a place in Sunday’s final against Italy.

But the crowd went wild as Harry Kane knocked an extra-time penalty in the back of the net.

England fans Scarlet Devereux and Lucy Millard, both 18, were elated as they came out of Wembley Stadium.

Ms Devereux said: ‘It was a brilliant game, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing.’

Ms Millard added: ‘It’s the first time in so many years we’ve been in the semi-finals so it’s absolutely amazing. It’s coming home.’

John Samonas, 47, who watched the game from the stands with his son Lucas, 13, said the atmosphere in Wembley Stadium was ‘surreal’.

Mr Samonas, a ship broker from London, said: ‘It was great, I can’t believe it – it was surreal.

‘It was amazing, it was exhausting, it was emotionally draining, just let everything out.’

When asked if he thought England could beat Italy in the final, Lucas, who had just watched his first international game, said: ‘Southgate can do it – it will be difficult but we can win.’

No boos were heard tonight as players took the knee to show support for Black Lives Matter tonight.

ITV commentators said the atmosphere was ‘one of the best’ in recent memory, heralding the ‘buzz’ and ‘sense of occasion’ felt in the huge stadium.

Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, wife Princess Mary, and their son Prince Christian, 15, were given Covid exemptions to travel to London for the tense clash.
