Barcelona must pay £12m to release Suarez amid Liverpool links

Barcelona will reportedly have to pay £12 million if they want to terminate their contract with Luis Suarez.

Suarez has become surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp as new manager Ronald Koeman prepares to rebuild the squad.

Suarez is seen as part of the squad’s ageing problem and looks set to leave this summer.

According to Goal, the Catalan side will have to pay around £12 million in compensation fees if they want the Uruguayan to leave before the start of the season.

Koeman is believed to have told the player over the phone that he is no longer needed.

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez is widely regarded as his successor, although the player may avoid a move if the club’s turmoil continues.

Suarez has told club representatives that he will continue to train with the first team until they come to a decision.

The financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic means they may have to retain Suarez until his contract expires next summer.

Suarez has been one of the world’s top goalscorers while playing at the Nou Camp. He’s scored 141 goals in 197 games for the club and has won multiple trophies.

However, under former manager Quique Setien, he failed to live up to expectations and could have played his last game in the famous shirt.

Setien was sacked after a trophy-less campaign which saw Barca fall way behind their European rivals. The turmoil has been worsened by Lionel Messi’s transfer request and potential move to Man City.

Liverpool could benefit from Barca’s turmoil this summer. If the Spanish club does decide to release Suarez, they may be able to pick up their former striker on a free.

Suarez was the club’s main goalscorer between 2011 and 2014, with his form earning him the big money move to Barca.

Suarez could make a sensational return to Anfield this summer if Barca want to axe their man.
