Following several members of the “Buffy” cast speaking out, now the members of the “Angel” cast have lent their voices in support of former co-star Charisma Carpenter.
Last week Carpenter levelled allegations of abuse and misconduct by “Buffy” and “Angel” creator and showrunner Joss Whedon whilst working on both series. In the wake of that her “Buffy” co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Benson, Emma Caulfield, Eliza Dushku, Anthony Stewart Head and Michelle Trachtenberg all came out in support of her.
This weekend, Angel himself David Boreanaz tweeted: “I am here for you to listen and support you. Proud of your strength.” Carpenter responded to that saying: “I know you’re there for me, David. I appreciate all you’ve done to demonstrate that support privately as well. Especially since Wednesday … thank you so much.”
He wasn’t the only one. J. August Richards, who played Gunn on the show, tweeted: “Sending you my love, Charisma. I know the feelings of vulnerability and fear that come with speaking your truth. As I said to you yesterday, I am here for you, however you need me.”
James Marsters, who played fan-favorite character Spike, said on Twitter: “While I will always be honored to have played the character of Spike, the Buffy set was not without challenges. I do not support abuse of any kind, and am heartbroken to learn of the experiences of some of the cast. I send my love and support to all involved.”
Then there’s Amy Acker, who played Fred, who also weighed in today saying: “I will always be proud of the work we all did on Angel. While I personally had a good and professional experience, it is heartbreaking to hear that not everyone did. I do not condone any actions that made anyone feel hurt or uncomfortable, and I offer love and support to everyone who is speaking out to tell their truths.”
Another voice who has come forward in the last few days is Marti Noxon, the celebrated writer-producer who served as showrunner on the final two seasons. She tweeted: “I would like to validate what the women of Buffy are saying and support them in telling their story. They deserve to be heard. I understand where Charisma, Amber, Michelle and all the women who have spoken out are coming from.”
As of writing, Whedon has yet to publicly respond to Carpenter’s claims.
