New photos from the Sicily set of the currently filming fifth “Indiana Jones” movie have showcased something unexpected – extras dressed as ancient Romans.

The photos up at The Daily Mail show Harrison Ford and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge on set in Italy as Ford’s Indiana Jones is seen wearing a parachute and is pulled out of a ditch by Waller-Bridge’s character.

The photos also show off a large boat packed with over a dozen men dressed in Roman garb manning the oars and later donning Roman battle gear ahead of filming scenes in which they “charged with swords in the air”.

Before these shots hit, an online rumor suggested the film’s action will partially take place in various eras in the past which has led to the natural question – is Indy 5 a time travel movie? Is it simply for flashback scenes tied to the film’s macguffin? Is he taking on hostile cosplayers?

While the film starts off in the U.S. in the 1960s, shooting in the U.K. confirmed that at least part of the film unfolds during WW2 with a younger Indiana.

After three months of recovery from a shoulder injury, Ford returned to work last week and was seen shooting scenes with Mads Mikkelsen. James Mangold helms the film which is currently targeting a July 29th 2022 release.
