AMD has revealed its upcoming Zen 3 Ryzen 5000-series CPU line-up, jumping from the current Zen 2 architecture on the Ryzen 3000-series.
Four new processors were announced yesterday, the most promoted being the Ryzen 9 5900X – a 12-core/24-thread CPU with 3.7 GHz base/4.8 GHz boost clock and 105W power draw. There was also the even more powerful, but saved until last, 5950X.
The Zen 3 architecture now boasts a unified 32MB 8-core cache complex allowing every core to communicate directly with the cache for reduced latency – boosting processing times for every program and game you run on your PC.
What does that mean in practical terms for gaming? A game like “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” in 1080p will offer 26% more FPS than the previous generation flagship the 3900XT on the same graphics card.
More importantly it finally allows AMD to compete with Intel which has effectively stalled on CPU development for years now but has held the crown of having the best CPUs for games for fifteen years.
AMD’s new chip offers performance either in line or a fraction better than Intel’s flagship i9-10900K CPU with AMD’s offering giving advantages of anywhere from -3% (Battlefield V) to +21% (League of Legends) on game titles. Most in the listed example run at around a 5-6% improvement to Intel’s best.
