Alison Brie reveals she had a ‘peeing incident’ on first season of Mad Men

Alison Brie has recalled a particularly memorable moment she had while filming 1960s-set drama Mad Men, one that taught her all about the difficulties of old-fashioned undergarments.

In 2007, Alison, 38, made her first appearance as a recurring guest star on a TV show, playing the role of Trudy Campbell.

Although she is now a seasoned actor with multiple film and TV credits under her belt, at the time she felt a huge amount of pressure not to disappoint in one of her first major acting jobs.

During a recent appearance on actor Justin Long’s podcast, Life is Short with Justin Long, the Glow star revealed that she once had a ‘peeing incident’ on the set of Mad Men when she was rushing to set.

She explained that she wore a girdle under her costume, an undergarment that’s ‘basically like biker shorts that go all the way up to your ribs’.

Describing the garment as ‘time period appropriate’, Alison said that ‘there’s a small hole in them’ at the bottom.

‘I didn’t know for the first season of Mad Men that you really weren’t supposed to wear underwear under them because they are underwear,’ Alison admitted, saying that she was trying to be ‘respectful’ towards the wardrobe department and that the thought of not wearing any of her own underwear felt ‘gross’.

‘So I had underwear on and I was rushing to set, and I was like I have to go to the bathroom,’ Alison told Justin.

The actor stated that as Mad Men was her ‘first real job’ she didn’t ever want to be perceived as ‘the problem person’, even if she desperately had to go to the bathroom.

‘So [I] rushed to the bathroom, tried to pull the hole open, but I didn’t pull my underwear to the side, so I’m peeing and I’m not hearing it hit the bowl and then I just feel warm. I just feel warm,’ Alison said.

‘And it was a full pee, because I thought I was going to pee in the toilet.’

What’s more, Alison ended up going straight to set afterwards, doing several takes having wet herself underneath her costume.

Fortunately, Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant was very understanding, telling Alison ‘it wouldn’t be the first time’ when she revealed what had happened.

Let’s face it – there are probably far more peeing-yourself-on-set stories than many of us realise.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Glow, the series about a women’s professional wrestling show in the 1980s in which Alison stars, had been cancelled, despite being renewed for a fourth and final season.

Marc Maron, who plays Sam Sylvia in the show, later suggested that a Glow movie should be made so they can wrap up the story appropriately.

Mad Men is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
