Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Aquaman,” “Watchmen”) is attached to star and executive produce a limited series adaptation of Blitz Bazawule’s upcoming debut novel “The Scent of Burnt Flowers” which FX has won in a major bidding war.
Told with a magical realist lens, the book follows a Black couple fleeing persecution in 1960s America who seek asylum in Ghana where they meet charismatic musician Kwesi (Abdul-Mateen) who they lean on to preserve their freedom.
Bazawule (“Beyonce: Black Is King”) will write, direct and produce via his Inward Gaze label alongside House Eleven10 and Macro Television Studios. Charles D. King, Marta Fernandez, Ahmadou Seck, Gaby Mena and Natalia Williams will executive produce.
