Hamburg's famous red light district, St. Pauli. The label on the bottle features a buxom barmaid cheerfully offering mugs of beer. The company introduced a spokesmodel to help with the advertising campaign in 1977 and in recent years has been plucking their spokesmodels from the pages of playboy magazine.
Since this friendly barmaid is well liked by most and slightly racy, it is sure to be a good choice for a Halloween costume.
While there have been many incarnations of the image and costume of St.. Pauli Girl, it's best to stick with a somewhat authentic version. The most recent versions of the spokesmodel costume are little more than lingerie, and leave little to the imagination.
While it is possible to purchase a ready made costume, it can be a lot more fun and sometimes much cheaper to build your own. It also gives it a more authentic feel, and will certainly be much more appreciated by any costume judging contest.
The first thing you'll need to start with is a full skirt that falls to mid-calf at least. You may want to add a petticoat underneath to fill out the hips and help with movement. The top skirt should be red with a black ribbon around the hemline. You'll also need some blue stockings and a good shiny pair of black shoes. You may be able to pull some of these things from your own closet, and if not, many goodwill stores can finish filling the requirements of the costume.
For the top half, you'll need to find a full sleeved white peanut blouse. Since this blouse will be worn underneath there is some flexibility with the type of blouse. You can have a slight collar, as long as the sleeves are full and billowing. You'll also want to find a good corset vest to wear on top. this will go over the white blouse and highlight not only you cinched waistline, but also your bosom, which should be spilling over the black vest. Since this is a halloween costume, feel free to stuff your bra to finish filling out the blouse. The final touch on the costume is the long loose blue apron, which is more of an accessory than a necessity, since it should still expose the rest of the dress. You'll also want to make sure that you have some prop beer mugs with handles to carry around and if you can manage two or three in each hand, even better!
In terms of hair and make-up, you'll want to have reddish brown hair loosely pulled up into an easy bun on the top of your head. If you have curly or wavy hair, you may not need to use that much product, depending on the volume of your hair, but it certainly can help. If you have a layered haircut, you can pull your hair into a ponytail, wrap it in a circular bun, and secure it only with pins (no hair-ties) and then shake your head so that a few locks fall loose around your face . This flattering effect will also tie in nicely with the easy nature of the costume.
If you do not have a hair that can easily styled this way, there are many places to find wigs online that will lend a very authentic flair to the costume.
Makeup should be casual and natural- a little blush and simple eyes with a pink or sheer red lipstick.
