Encanto Atop Calm Before Box Office Storm
Disney Pictures

Disney’s animated musical fable “Encanto” held onto the top spot at the post-Thanksgiving weekend domestic box-office with no new major releases to challenge it.

In its second weekend of release, the film collected $12.38 million – a 54% drop from its debut which is in line with Disney’s recent Thanksgiving releases. Its two-week total stands at $57.6 million with the film slated to hit Disney+ around Christmas.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “House of Gucci” came in second and third respectively with $10.35 million and $6.77 million respectively. Fathom Events’ “Christmas With the Chosen: The Messengers” came in fourth, a holiday special of the religious streaming series “The Chosen”. It is on track for a $4 million haul over the three-day weekend.

The quiet box-office is seen as the calm before a storm of new releases. Spielberg’s superbly received “West Side Story” opens next week which leads into the big event that is “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in two weeks.

That 150-minute Marvel & Sony film is expected to easily score the biggest opening at the box-office since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in late 2019 and a report at Box-Office Pro suggests it is on track for an opening anywhere from $190-250 million – one of the biggest openings of all time.

As if that wasn’t enough, less than a week later comes “The Matrix Resurrections” from Warners. There’s also various other films opening theatrically before Christmas including “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Sing 2,” “Red Rocket” and “The King’s Man” while others go streaming exclusive or streaming plus small theatrical with “Don’t Look Up,” “The Lost Daughter,” “The Tender Bar,” “Swan Song” and “Being the Ricardos”.
