Learning a second language can be a huge benefit in modern day society. Typically, most people will learn new languages in a school environment. For some people studying a new language through vocabulary quizzes, translation of English words and memorization may be the easiest way to develop their knowledge base of that language. For others, real life exposure proves to be most beneficial. Regardless of the method of learning, having the knowledge and being able to speak additional languages, help people at work, in social environments and while traveling.

In work settings, a second language proves useful when companies have expanded on a global level. Most consumer goods sold in grocery and convenient stores have multi-languages on their packaging. Employees who can communicate with companies and consumers in foreign countries are key assets to the growth of business. For instance, if a company would like to sell their products in a Walmart in Italy they would need key employees to secure this relationship. Being able to speak and thoroughly understand Italian would be a requirement for this job. The achievement of product sales and understanding is dependent on how clearly people comprehend and accept that product. Being able to communicate its message is imperative to the overall process in getting people to accept and buy services and goods.

Socially, it is becoming more and more necessary to have a knowledge base of additional languages. For instance, some neighborhoods are becoming more populated with people who speak Spanish as their first language. Restaurants and retail stores are employing many of these people. Having knowledge of this language would enable people to at least understand and participate in conversations with them. It would be easier to state a fact, ask a question or simply say hello.

Being able to comprehend another language is extremely beneficial when traveling. It helps travelers with directions, money exchange and general conversation with local people. Communicating with the native people of countries makes travelers feel more connected to where they are visiting, as well. It allows them to read the street signs, menus at restaurants and packages in stores. It also lets them truly hear how the locals interact with each other. This type of exposure is key to understanding the culture and everyday living within a community.

While these facts regarding language knowledge may seem like common sense, it’s important to remember that people of most nations around the world learn two languages starting at a very young age. The majority of countries have citizens who are knowledgeable in two or three languages. In order for the United States to remain the strongest country in the world, its citizens will have to be able to relate and compete on a global level. Being proficient in at least two languages is key to this success. Whether it’s shopping in a store, visiting with a neighbor, ordering at a restaurant or traveling to another country, developing additional language knowledge will help improve communication. Clearer communication leads to better relationships within communities.
