When you first start learning to drive, you may be tempted to seek free tuition from friends or family using a private car. After all, learning to drive is an expensive business and you will save yourself a lot of money this way, right?
You may say that I am biased, but in fact, very few people pass their driving test without at least some lessons from a professional driving instructor.
Remember that a driving school car is fitted with dual controls, which means the instructor can take over control of the vehicle if you get into difficulties. Also, he or she is trained to deal with learners and will(hopefully) keep calm in stressful situations, whereas a spouse, parent, brother, or friend may resort to shouting and leave both teacher and pupil nervous wrecks!
The added stress of worrying about possible damage to the precious family car can cause a lot of unhelpful tension! Many otherwise happily married couples end up arguing when one or the other decides to teach their partner to drive!
Of course the more time you spend behind the wheel of a car the better. More driving experience will make you more competent and confident when the day of your driving test finally arrives.
The most sensible and advisable method of action in my opinion, is to at least get the basic grounding with professional instruction. Once you are able to control the car safely without the driving instructor taking control of the steering wheel or pedals, by all means have extra practice with your husband, father, friend etc.
Beware that it should be practice and not instruction that you get from your spouse, friend or relative.
A professional driving instructor knows exactly what is required to pass the driving test and will teach you accordingly. Don`t let your uncle Fred tell you that it`s acceptable to drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand dangling out of the car window! That may be an obvious example, but there are many less obvious bad habits that experienced drivers acquire over the years that could cause you to fail the driving test if you copy them. Most experienced drivers are unaware of their bad habits and the consequences for you as a learner driver.
Whether taking driving lessons from a professional driving instructor or practising with a family member or friend, you should feel completely at ease with the person sitting next to you, as this means you will be more relaxed and that you will learn more quickly in a pleasant atmosphere.
If you are unhappy with your driving instructor and feel that you are not making any progress with him or her, don`t be scared of making a change. Sometimes it is just a matter of a clash of personalities. But in any event, you are paying for a service and if you are not satisfied with things, don’t just suffer in silence!
Learning to drive is a milestone in everybody`s life. It can at times be a stressful and frustrating experience, but the long term rewards are well worth it! Yes, learning to drive properly costs a lot of money. However, Think of it not just as a means to getting a driving licence, but as an investment in your future, which will go on paying dividends for the rest of your driving life.
