Marvel Plans More Animation Diverse Works

Between three series so far, at least two more on the way, and four films – Marvel Studios is pumping out a LOT of content in 2021.

Too much for you? You better get used to it, cause this is just the start. Victoria Alonso, executive VP of film production at Marvel Studios, spoke to Variety as part of this year’s NALIP Media Summit and revealed that so much more is coming.

The next series is “What If…?,” the first animated series from Marvel Studios and according to Alonso it won’t be the last:

“We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well. We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.”

She also confirmed that a “few other shows” will come out before the end of the year and confirmed that the list includes both “Ms. Marvel” and “Hawkeye”. Alonso says they’re also embracing different points of view in an effort to offer better storytelling:

“Balance is the key to how we can be better storytellers, more efficient filmmakers, better executives, better people. I think it’s important to consistently listen to what fans are saying. If there’s a vast majority that feels that something is not hitting home, then we need to look at it, but then there are times where we say, ‘You know what, this is a story we’re gonna tell.’”

The comments come as Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” has been both the most successful box-office launch and the most pirated film of the pandemic era.

One person who is a big fan of the company is “Little Woods” and “Candyman” director Nia DaCosta who is directing “The Marvels” (essentially the “Captain Marvel” sequel) and has nothing but nice things to say about her time working on the project. She tells EW: “It’s amazing. [It’s] more [freedom] than I’ve had on anything. It’s great because we’re all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie.”
