One of the recurring jokes in the wake of the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was whether we’ll be getting three or four-hour director’s cuts of his other works.
The frequent butt of that joke was “Sucker Punch,” the divisive genre mashup that’s arguably the purest Snyder work to date. Well, according to the man himself, a director’s cut of the film does indeed exist.
As part of a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Snyder said working on the film was the first time he really faced having someone try to restructure a movie he made to make it work in a more commercial way:
“[Sucker Punch] was the first time where I really faced, like, a true radical restructuring of the film for it to be more commercial. And there is a director’s cut of that movie that has yet to be released. I’ll say that out loud.”
Snyder went on to talk about the tone of his movie and calls it a protest film about the issues with genre works:
“It’s a protest movie in a lot of ways. It’s a movie about genre. I was asked at the time ‘Why did you dress the girls like that?’ and I’d always go ‘I didn’t dress them like that, you did.’ I always saw it as an indictment of, in some ways, popular culture. I think at the time I was criticized for it being the opposite, like, some sort of sexist rant. It was fun to make and I still love it to this day.”
One day his original vision for “Sucker Punch” will score a release somewhere, for now though there are no plans for such a release.
