Bravo Packing Inc. is recalling two types of frozen raw dog food due to possible salmonella and listeria contamination, which could make both pets and their humans sick.

The recall affects Bravo Packing’s Performance Dog and Ground Beef products, which both come in two-pound and five-pound plastic sleeves that were distributed nationwide, according to an alert posted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. Samples of both types of frozen raw dog food tested positive for salmonella and listeria during an FDA inspection. (Note that this recall does not affect dog food from Bravo Pet Foods, a similarly named but unrelated company.)

Salmonella and listeria are both types of foodborne illness caused by bacteria. Dogs that eat contaminated food might show symptoms like lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, and a fever, the FDA says. Pets that are infected can spread bacteria to humans (and other animals) via their saliva and feces. And people can also become infected (by, say, handing the food and then touching their mouths) even if they’re not the one eating the food.

In people, both salmonella and listeria infections can cause symptoms such as nausea, fever, chills, muscle aches, and diarrhea. But both salmonella and listeria may sometimes cause mores severe illnesses, which are more likely to occur in young children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems. In particular, a listeria infection (listeriosis) can be a risk for pregnant people and can cause serious complications, including miscarriage, the Mayo Clinic says.

So far, there are no reports of animals or people becoming sick due to these recalled foods. But if you purchased any of the recalled products, you should dispose of it and definitely not feed it to your pets. But if you think your pet may have already eaten any of the recalled food, you should contact the vet for guidance.
