This Morning viewers fear for vaccine as Chris Whitty addresses the nation over rise in coronavirus cases

Matthew Wright has appeared on This Morning where he revealed how he’s concerned Brits won’t follow any new lockdown measures if they know a coronavirus vaccine is just around the corner.

During the breakfast show, the regular hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were put on hold as they tuned into an important press conference held by England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty.

The physician appeared on a live broadcast with fellow medical expert Patrick Vallance where they discussed the rise in Covid-19 transmissions.

While warning there could be 50,000 new coronavirus cases and more deaths by mid-October, they also shed light on where scientists are at with a vaccine.

Mr Whitty explained how the public need to take responsibility for their own transmission, stressing the importance of self-isolating if someone shows symptoms.

He also indicated that science will play a huge role in controlling the spread of Covid-19, noting: ‘Its investing in drugs, vaccines, diagnostics.’

It was then that his right-hand-man Mr Vallance took over, and revealed England could have a vaccine before the year is out.

He said: ‘As Chris has said we will be living with this virus, one important part of that is vaccines.

‘There is good progress that has been made many vaccines now show an immune response of a type that ought to be protective and several vaccines are in the very late stage of clinical testing aiming to show they are both effective and safe.’

Following the conference, Matthew spoke to Phil and Holly about his concerns, seeing the former I’m A Celebrity star say: ‘I came away feeling a little more optimistic from watching this.

‘It was only a couple of days ago Patrick Vallance was pouring cold water on any possibility of a vaccine being ready by Christmas, and there he was just a couple of seconds ago saying that in small amounts it could be there.

‘Although we don’t know if any of the vaccines will work which is a bit of a concern and I do wonder what kind of message this has on the British public – who are tired of mixed messages.’

He pressed: ‘If we’re told a vaccine is just weeks away is that going to increase our ability to engage in lockdown or is it going to go the other way?

‘Are we going to think, “to hell with lockdown?” I’m slightly cautious about that.’

However, a fast-tracked vaccine didn’t seem all too popular on Twitter, as viewers were quick to disregard it until there had been long-term testing.

‘Who wants a vaccine that hasn’t had long term testing and the company can’t be held accountable if it harms you,’ one wrote while another said: ‘Would you want a rushed through vaccine?’

Someone else added: ‘Having a vaccine by Xmas is a big risk. That is three months away. That would be amazing however would the vaccine by valid would it be viable that’s the question. I would not trust a vaccine that is rushed and ready in three months just like that.’
