Demi Lovato reportedly made her ex Max Ehrich aware of their split, despite him claiming that he found out when reading about it in tabloids.
The former couple split two months after getting engaged, with the Young and the Restless actor breaking his silence to write: ‘Imagine finding out about the status of your relationship through a tabloid.’
However, a source close to Demi told PEOPLE: ‘Demi made Max aware that the relationship was over and it was going to come out in the press.’
Demi, 28, has stayed publicly quiet on the split, except for posting a photo where she appeared to have taken off her engagement ring.
The former couple got engaged in July after just a few months of dating, but have now made the ‘tough decision’ to end their romance.
A source told People: ‘It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers.
‘They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.’
It was later reported that distance was a factor in the split, after the two both struggled with the relationship when going back to work after spending so much time together at the peak of the pandemic.
It comes just two months after Max, 29, popped the question to Demi while in Malibu, with the Tell Me You Love Me hitmaker confirming the news on Instagram.
Sharing a snap of the two in a sweet embrace, Demi penned: ‘When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his “little partner” – something that might’ve sounded strange without his southern cowboy like accent.
‘To me it made perfect sense. And today that word makes perfect sense again but today I’m officially going to be someone else’s partner.’
