Electricity is one of the wonders of the world and yet it is taken so much for granted. Just over a hundred years ago many people had never heard of it. City streets were lit by gas light and homes were dependent on kerosene lamps and candles. They were smelly and often created fires and the need for something better was required. Then came the miracle of power generation and transmission of it through wires.
Who would have thought it possible? Hidden in the atmosphere is far more than that, however, as we are just coming to terms with natural forces and ways of dealing with it.
Because of electricity we now have machines capable of doing housework. We have refrigeration, ovens, and more recently the Internet, computers, and all other things of the 21st Century technology.
In the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), the government is building solar farms. As with other places around the world this technology involves panels pointed to the sun. They are designed so they follow the sun light as the solar body moves across the sky. This too is dependent on electricity to make it work.
Then there are the wind farms and some of these are located well away from the ACT in other states. The power they generate is transported by wires and is capable of powering thousands of homes. Together the wind and solar farms will make the Territory independent of other sources of power by the year 2020, which is the target set in Paris.
While a small area like this can do it so can so many other regions. All they need is the incentive and to give up the idea of coal-fired power stations which belch huge amounts of filthy carbon pollution into the atmosphere. If only all governments can be encouraged to use nature to generate power the world would become a better and cleaner place to live.
