Netflix is in negotiations to give a green light to a TV series adaptation of Guy Ritchie’s 2019 dark comedy crime caper “The Gentlemen”.
The original film actually started out as a TV series pitch before it became a feature that scored acclaim for its various colorful performances from Hugh Grant as a sleazy journalist to Colin Farrell as a plaid tracksuit-wearing fighting coach and Charlie Hunnam as an enforcer.
Matthew McConaughey, Henry Golding, Jeremy Strock, Eddie Marsan and Michelle Dockery co-starred in the film which grossed $115 million worldwide off a $22 million budget. It followed an American marijuana kingpin in England who is looking to sell his business, setting off a chain of blackmail and schemes to undermine him.
Ritchie co-wrote the series’ pilot script, will direct the first two episodes and will serve as an executive producer on the series, which Miramax TV is producing alongside Moonage. Ivan Atkinson, Marn Davies, Bill Block, Marc Helwig, Will Gould and Matthew Read also executive produce.
This marks a rare TV foray for Ritchie who had no creative involvement in Crackle’s series adaptation of his film “Snatch”.
