1. The Shape of Water
Guillermo Del Toro’s Oscar-winning movie will make you rethink what a sexy leading man can look like. The Shape of Water follows Elisa (Sally Hawkins), who works in a high-security government laboratory. She leads a fairly isolated life until she befriends one of the lab’s biggest secrets—an amphibian man (Doug Jones). The pair become close friends and eventually more. The sci-fi film is full of beautiful imagery, lots of sexual tension, and a pretty intense bath-time sex scene.
2. The Photograph
This is a tale of two love stories. The first focuses on present-day Mae (Issa Rae) and Michael (LaKeith Stanfield), while the second revolves around Mae’s mother, Christina (Chanté Adams), and her former love, Isaac (Y’lan Noel). Christina was a photographer who dreamed of making it big in New York City; Isaac preferred his quiet life in Louisiana. Ultimately, Christina makes it to the city, becomes a famous photographer, and has Mae. As an adult, Mae’s love life reflects her mother’s. Mae starts dating Michael, a journalist writing about the now-deceased Christina—just as he gets a job in London. The movie switches between Christina and Mae’s stories and offers both sweet and sexy moments.
3. Four Lovers
This French film is about two married couples who start swapping partners after one very flirty dinner party. Although there are numerous erotic scenes, many viewers talk about one in particular that involves all four individuals, some pastry flour, and yes, sex. Initially, the couples are close friends, and their arrangement is carefree. However, things get complicated as everyone learns how to navigate their relationships, parenting, and their emotions.
4. Meet Me in Montenegro
Meet Me in Montenegro is based on the real-life romance of filmmaker Alex Holdridge and dancer Linnea Saasen. The two meet in Berlin, have a fling, and decide to travel together. The relationship is cut short when Saasen leaves Holdridge, who continues to think about her even when he returns to the United States. Years later, the pair meet by chance (again in Europe) and resume their affair, despite living in different countries. In a subplot, Holdridge’s friend attempts to inject excitement into his own relationship by exploring sex parties with his partner. Between the two story lines, we think you’ll enjoy the mix of sexy and heartfelt moments.
5. Liz in September
Every year, main character Liz (Patricia Velasquez) celebrates her birthday at a beach resort with some friends. This year, Liz is privately reckoning with her cancer diagnosis, which she keeps from her friends. At the resort, she meets Eva (Eloisa Maturen), who is dealing with her own grief after losing her child. At first, Liz pursues Eva because of a bet she makes with friends. But the two form a deeper connection, and their relationship becomes about much more than sex. Still, you can expect plenty of sexy scenes.
6. Just Wright
There’s plenty of sexual tension between Common and Queen Latifah in this romantic comedy. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist, who helps basketball player Scott McKnight (Common), rehabilitate following an injury. Leslie’s best friend just happens to start dating Scott, but that doesn’t stop the physical therapist from falling in love with her basketball star patient. We won’t spoil the ending of this film, which follows the “will they or won’t they” plotline, but we will say it’s definitely worth watching just for the chemistry.
7. Plus One
Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine play Ben and Alice, two college friends who get really tired of going to weddings alone. They decide to be one another’s wedding date for an entire year and predictably grow closer during the process. The two start dating fairly early in the movie but soon have relationship problems. Can they make it through the whole year or will they end up going solo once again?
8. 28 Hotel Rooms
What begins as a one-night stand turns into an ongoing affair in this movie starring Chris Messina and Marin Ireland. The two characters meet randomly and have casual sex since both live on opposite coasts and are already in relationships. However, they continue on with their affair and meet up in various cities for some hotel room encounters. Since their entire relationship is based on sex, there are plenty of lusty scenes.
9. Vita & Virginia
Literary fans will find a lot to enjoy in this film depicting Virginia Woolf’s love affair with socialite Vita Sackville West. Set in the 1920s, both writers are married but embark on a relationship that was considered taboo at the time. If you’re a fan of Woolf’s writing, this biopic offers a rare glimpse into the author’s private life and contains plenty of romance, passion, and literary references.
10. The Layover
It’s a tale that’s been told over and over again: Two best friends fight over the love of one person. This silly movie follows two stressed-out friends, Kate (Alexandra Daddario) and Meg (Kate Upton), who go on vacation. After their plane is forced to make an emergency landing due to bad weather, the pair meet a very sexy stranger named Ryan, played by Matt Barr. The friends carry out some pretty ridiculous stunts in order to get Matt’s attention. But their antics are fun to watch, and the ridiculous sex scene between Daddario and Barr manages to be equal parts awkward and hot.
11. This Means War
Another film with the friends-fighting-over-the-same-love-interest plotline, This Means War is about two CIA operatives, played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, who both meet Reese Witherspoon via online dating. Predictably, they both fall in love with Witherspoon, and the best friends use their CIA sleuthing skills to try to win her over. Pine and Hardy are both pretty swoon-worthy, so chances are you’ll root for each of them at some points. However, the kitchen sex scene between Witherspoon and Pine is so good, you can’t help but want to see more of them together.
12. Professor Marston and Wonder Woman
For a sexy period piece, look no further than Professor Marston and Wonder Woman. This film is loosely based on psychologist William Moulton Marston, who developed the lie detector test and created the Wonder Woman comic book. More specifically, the film is about Marston, his wife, and the couple’s relationship with their shared lover. Along with learning more about Marston’s inspiration for Wonder Woman, you’ll get plenty of three-way sex scenes.
13. Elena Undone
Elena (Necar Zadegan) is a pastor’s wife who meets Payton (Traci Dinwiddie), a writer, at an adoption agency. Elena already has a child with her husband but wants to add to their family. The two become friends, and to Elena’s surprise, the relationship turns into something more sensual. You can expect plenty of sexual tension as you watch the relationship dynamics evolve from mild flirtation to a full-on affair.
14. Save the Last Dance
As the name implies, this movie is filled with lots of dancing, which can be pretty steamy at times. Aspiring dancer Sara (Julia Stiles), who dreams of becoming a professional ballerina, connects with hip-hop dancer Derek. After Sara joins Derek’s world of hip-hop dancing, lots of closeness ensues. One particularly notable scene involves some grinding while the two practice a routine to Pink’s song, “You Make Me Sick.” Lots of people rightfully ridicule certain aspects of this movie (looking at you, Juilliard application dance sequence!), but it’s worth watching for the nostalgic view of high-school love.
15. Ammonite
Kate Winslet plays paleontologist Mary Anning, who lived with her mother and sold fossils in their shop during the 1800s. In the film, Winslet meets a fellow paleontologist (played by James McArdle), who asks her to care for his sick wife, Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan). Initially, Mary and Charlotte clash, but eventually the two become close friends, and then lovers. Although there is no evidence the real Anning ever had a similar relationship, that likely won’t stop you from enjoying this fictional one.
16. Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong
Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong is a story of chance encounters. Josh (Bryan Greenberg) is an American ex-pat living in Hong Kong, and Ruby (Jamie Chung) is a toy designer visiting the area on business. At one point, Ruby is lost, and Josh very politely walks the traveler to her destination. Along the way, the two stop for a drink and flirt until Josh reveals he has a girlfriend. The two separate but run into each other in Hong Kong a year later. They pick up where they left off and spend the night exploring, which includes one romantic dance scene. If you’re looking for a movie that’s over-the-top sexy, this isn’t it. But the anticipation of whether these two will get together is definitely enticing.
17. Silver
This crime thriller stars Sharon Stone as a book editor, Carly, who moves into a new apartment building and starts sleeping with her neighbor, Zeke (William Baldwin). However, Carly starts to wonder if her new lover is trustworthy when her other neighbors die suspiciously. It doesn’t make Carly feel any better when her landlord warns that Zeke could be dangerous. Who is the real killer? Can Stone trust Baldwin? This movie will keep you guessing while providing many erotic scenes.
18. Monogamy
Chris Messina plays Theo, a photographer who secretly follows his clients and takes photos of them from afar upon request. (It’s a totally bizarre ask, but Theo’s clients want to see how they appear to others while going about their daily errands.) Theo is happily engaged to his partner, Nat (Rashida Jones), but that changes after he takes on a new client, who goes by Subgirl (Meital Dohan). Theo begins to lust after Subgirl after she masturbates in the park while he watches from a distance. After that, he can’t stop thinking about her, and over the course of the film, Theo’s obsession grows as he carries on a voyeuristic love affair.
19. Premature
This coming-of-age film follows the romance of a New York City teen, Ayanna (Zora Howard), who meets musician Isaiah (Joshua Boone) the summer before going to college. You’ll see Ayanna navigate all of the intense feelings that can come with finding your first love: passion, romance, and jealousy. The two have an intense connection, so you’ll get plenty of sexy scenes, but you’ll also enjoy the satisfying plot and watching Ayanna experience the bliss, lust, and heartache of falling in love.
20. Friends With Benefits
Jamie (Mila Kunis) and Dylan (Justin Timberlake) explore the nuances of no-strings-attached hookups in Friends With Benefits. Initially, their casual relationship goes pretty smoothly, and the two stay friends when Jamie breaks things off to form a real relationship with someone else. But their relationship becomes more complicated when the two start hooking up again and question whether it’s possible to keep things casual in the long term. This movie offers the right balance of sexy and feel-good vibes.
21. The Last Mistress
Set in the 1830s, Ryno (Fu’ad Ait Aatou) visits his mistress, Vellini (Asia Argento), one last time just days before marrying his fiancée, Hermangarde (Roxane Mesquida). Hermangarde’s grandmother, played by Claude Sarraute, learns about Ryno’s affair and demands to know the full story. In flashbacks, Ryno recounts the affair in full detail (yes, to his in-law!), but claims that he is now fully dedicated to his fiancée. Ryno and Hermangarde get married as planned, but Vellini doesn’t intend on losing her long-time lover. You’ll have to watch to see how this story ends.
22. Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies
Sexy films can be educational, too, as this documentary exhibits. Skin explores the history of nudity in movies from the very beginning with silent films to modern-day Hollywood movies. Yes, there’s plenty of nudity and sex scenes, but there are also interviews and commentary on how movies have changed throughout time, as well as interesting insight into how sex scenes are filmed.
23. Life Like
Life Like is a sexy thriller involving a couple and their robot. Sophie (Addison Timlin) and James (James D’Arcy) are a wealthy couple who order their robot Henry (Steven Strait) to help with tasks around their home. (It’s worth noting that Sophie is originally against having help.) Turns out, Sophie was right to be reluctant about inviting a robot into their home. Henry uses his technology to manipulate the couple and causes conflict between the two. In one particularly sexy bathroom scene, Henry skillfully seduces James. Can Sophie and James maintain their relationship or will their meddling robot get in the way? You’ll have to watch to see.
24. Frida
This movie is based on the life of artist Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) and details her childhood, relationship with her husband, Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), and her numerous affairs. As a teen, Frida is involved in an accident, and while she’s recovering, begins painting. She meets Diego, a muralist, who becomes her mentor. They fall in love, marry, and have an intense relationship with each person having numerous affairs (at one point Diego has a relationship with Frida’s sister). They eventually divorce, but they can’t stay away from each other and later remarry. Between the beautiful costumes, skillful acting, and plentiful sex scenes, there’s so much to enjoy in Frida.
