Perhaps the only plus for wearing a face mask during this pandemic is that, on the coldest days, it acts as a shield against the freezing wind. In summer, masks can be a nuisance, as they make breathing tricky and collect sweat. But in winter, they’re actually helpful, creating a layer of heat for half of your face. Seeing as how many of us are spending more time outdoors in the chill to exercise and visit friends from a distance, why not look into finding the warmest mask out there?
You might be tempted to hope that a scarf, ski mask, or balaclava works well enough, but these are unfortunately not adequate substitutes for face masks that fight the spread of COVID-19. You should prioritize wearing a mask with multiple layers of fabric and a mask that fits your face tightly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say. That might mean that you actually “double-mask” (wear a medical procedure mask underneath a cloth mask) or that you opt for a cloth mask with a nose wire to help it fit your face more securely.
While gaiters are out as options, luckily, there are all sorts of warm winter face masks on the market made of chill-blocking materials like wool, flannel, and faux fur, that feel as soft and snuggly as they look. Some even include built-in ear muffs! Many of these masks are double- or triple-layered for extra warmth and protection, with space for filters (though you should purchase these and medical procedure masks on your own). All of them include some sort of adjustable nose wire that enables the mask to better fit, as well. Below, you’ll find the cutest, coziest winter face masks to carry through this chilly weather.
